Homebrew on Nintendo DSi

In one of my last posts I told you how to run homebrew on your Nintendo DS.  Since that time I found my old Nintendo DS dead and needed a replacement.

I bought the new Nintendo DSi since there wasn’t any DS available anymore in my local store…..

What about homebrew software? Will it run on the new DSi? Yes it does. For about $12 you will be able to run all those great homebrew stuff again on the new DSi.

All you need to do is order the Acekard 2i  which I found here and voila, it works :-)

Nice solution for a good price. Maybe there are better alternatives? I have nu clue, but this one worked for me like a charm…

Want a new wallpaper?

desklickrSince I’ve started using a mac I have used this application. All it does is download great photo’s and put them on your desktop. This really works perfect and I have never has so many nice backgrounds. It’s possible to just keep one but it’s much nicer to use the autochange function. This provides you with a new desktop every few minutes or hours (depends on what you want). The apllication is free but if you use it you might want to donate some money to the developer.

You can find the application by following the link below.

Before I forget, it’s mac only……

Configure PS3 Media Server for Mac

Ok so, have you downloaded the new PS3 Media server software? Have you got it to work? Or did you get this:

ps3error

Don’t worry about it , this is how I solved it.

network-choice

First click the ” general configuration” tab. You can select you native language here if you like.

Probably you are running vm-ware or have multiple network port defined and PS3 Media Server selected the wrong port.

Select the port network port that you use. If you are not sure check your mac’s network settings in your system preferences.

In my case I have selected interface ” lo0″ which is the standard interface on my Imac.

After that enter you macs ip-adres in the ” force IP of the server” field. Don’t mess with the port option , you should be fine….

Once that is done save your work.

Restart the http server or just quit and restart to see if the application detects your ps3 now. If not search on you PS3 for media servers. It can take a little while.

If you get this following screen your done:

ps3-found

If you don’t get the screen above something is still wrong.

Let me know what you log says and maybe I can help you.

PS3 media server

I’ve been a fan of medialink since the beginning as you know, but there was always one thing missing…..

Subtitiles, medialink can’t encode data to stream. I’ve asked them if it would be available some time ago, this is the answer I got:

Subtitles are not supported by the console, the only way to add subtitles would be to re-encode the movie with subtitles burned into the video in the actual image. And realtime encoding isn’t currently possible on the Mac

You can use certain software to re-encode the video by hand and burn the subtitles in, far from ideal.

If you installed medialink on your mac just leave it there, it’s fine for most of the stuff you want to play. However now there is a new kid on the block…..and it’s GREAT!

PS3 Media Server!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, it can do a lot of things and it’s being updated pretty often and best of all it’s for FREE

Currently it supports the following features:

  • Ready to launch and play. No codec packs to install. No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing. All your folders are directly browsed by the PS3, there’s an automatic refresh also.
  • Real-time video transcoding via MEncoder, tsMuxer or Avisynth
  • DVD ISOs images / VIDEO_TS Folder transcoder
  • OGG/FLAC/MPC/APE audio transcoding
  • Thumbnail generation for Videos
  • You can choose with a virtual folder system your audio/subtitle language on the PS3!
  • All formats PS3 natively supports: MP3/WMA, JPG/PNG/GIF/TIFF, and all kind of videos (AVI, MP4, TS, M2TS, MPEG) the ps3 is willing to play
  • Display camera RAWs thumbnails (Canon / Nikon, etc.)
  • ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders for pictures/audio files
  • Support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb
  • Internet TV / Web Radio support with VLC, MEncoder or MPlayer
  • Podcasts audio/ Video feeds support
  • If you own a linux or windows machine (some people still do :-) ) it also supports :

    1. Lossless 5.1 PCM transcoding with DTS movies
    2. Remux video and remux/reencode all audio tracks to AC3/PCM in real time with tsMuxer
    3. FLAC 96kHz/24bits/5.1 support

I’ve installed it on my Mac and it works great, I ran into a few configuration setting that I had to set. I will come back on how to install in a next post.

Whoops almost forgot to place the links to this great software:

To the google code pages please

    Medialink update 1.59

For al you who are trying to get your mac to stream media to your PS3. Here it is, a new version of Medialink.

Personally I still haven’t found a better media streamer. Try it and see for yourself.

    You can download it here

    Upnp Mac –> PS3 mediaservers

Tonight I decided to find out what kind of media servers that use Upnp (universal plug and play) there are for a Mac that support the Playstation 3. To watch video and play music on your PS3 streaming it to the Mac.

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know I currently use Medialink which is fine, but maybe there are good alternatives?

    Here is the list

    Mediatomb (open source)

Fink (open source, not sure if it supports the PS3)

    TwonkeyMedia (commercial, 30 day trial)

    Medialink (commercial, 30 minute trial)

Allegro media server (commercial, time limited trial)

That’s it for now , I’ll add more later ;-) Don’t be shy to report more media servers for the Mac that support the PS3

    Spore my first Mac game?

I was really excited to see that Spore would be released by Electronic Arts this weekend. Now I’m not that excited anymore. I don’t really have games on my Mac, simply because I haven’t bought any except the ones that came with a software bundle I bought on the internet.

Trying to find some info about Spore I found several sites reporting NOT to buy this game? Why?

It seems EA put in some crazy security thingies that makes life pretty hard. I read that you can only install the game 4 times? If you would like to install it for the fifth time (for whatever reason) you’ll need to contact EA and say please to get another serial code.

Another reason not to buy the game is DRM and SECUrom it’s protected and messes with you internal PC. Sending all kinds of info towards EA!!!

So I decided not to buy this one , thanks a lot EA for putting this junk in!

For the people who want to try the game anyway…. good luck

    NZBdrop best alternative for now?

Yes, I’m still in need for a good usenet download application for the mac. Since I’ve started my search for a good binary downloader for my mac I started missing my windows machine…. Not really I still have windows on my Mac, but only for easy downloading from the binary groups… For now I use nzbdrop but I steel think this is not what I need however it does the job if you have a NZB file. I’ll try and put down some working methods later this week to see if any of you can help me improve my working scheme…

Leave a comment if you want!

I see a lot of people looking for a download link to nzbdrop. You can download it here!

No suitable usenet grabber for a mac

In my previous post I started looking at a suitable usenet grabber. Basicly all I wanted was an application which made it possible to download stuff in an easy way.

The application should be easy to use and do as many tasks for me as possible. So basicly I just want to drag and drop .nzb files into the application and the downloading should start. Multiple server support is not needed since I don’t use multiple servers at the moment.

Below you can see the list of apps I’ve tried.  Unfortunatly Igrabnews seemed like the best option for me but it seems unsupported and outdated for Leopard at the moment.

  • Unison
  • Thoth
  • Igrabnews
  • NZBDrop
  •

Conclusion is that I have NOT found an application that fullfills my need. As I mentioned before I used ALtbinz before on my Windows based machine and will now start using it in a windows emulator on my mac.  Simply because the application is so damn good. It does the downloading / parring and unrarring automaticly! Maybe I’ve missed the one application that does this on a mac, if so please LET ME KNOW…

For all you mac devellopers out there maybe you can have a look at Altbinz and come up with something similar for my mac. I know I’ll instantly buy and use it!

Usenet on a mac, what program to use for leeching.

If you are a switcher like me (throw out all your windows machines and buy a mac ;-) ) then there are some hurdles to take. One of them is finding good replacements for your usenet activities. If you’re not familair with usenet here is a good place to start.

In my old situation I always used altbinz which is by far (I think) the best and easiest to use usenet client on the windows platform. It’s freeware so give it a try if you still use a windows pc. Don’t forget to sent the authors some money if you keep using it, you will, trust me.

So I did some searches on the internet and came up with some usenet clients I would like to try. Here’s the list:

If you know another good application that needs to be added to this list please let me know!

At the moment I have no clue if these program do what I want them to do. I will install them one by one (if suited for leopard) and come back to you with my conclusions.

The application I want needs to be easy to use (support nzb-files) and basicly take as much work out of hands as possible (that why I like altbinz so much).

The result will be posted here shortly.
