How to play backup iso on ps3

It seems to good to be true but it seems possible to play backup games that are stored in the iso format now on the Playstation 3.
I have no way of testing if it works but the first indicators are positive. Please post your result in the comments.

There are a few prerequisites: Jailbreaked PS3 with backups enabled, External USB HDD

Playstation 3 hacked?

Last week the first rumors arrived that the Playstation 3 has been hacked. Via several media the news came to us. Most convincing was a video posted on youtube. The hack is done via a special boot procedure together with an USB stick. This procedure puts the PS3 in a debug mode and makes it possible to install a backupmanager. This backup manager then enables you to play games that you have backedup without having the actual game in the system.

Some people might think this is great, but there are still a lot of issues. The biggest one is where to get this USB stick. The original company that announced the “PS3 jailbrake” as they call it are not able to ship the sticks. Sony has succesfully stopped the company from shipping via the court.  Another issue is that the hack might be undone by a simply firmware upgrade of the ps3. This means either you don’t update from 3.41 and not being able to play the newest games or upgrade and have a useless USB stick.

So many things are still uncertain as I write this. Some other companies say they will bring their own usb stick for half of the price (original is +100 australian dollars). In real life i have not seen the hack and before that be carefull in buying these sticks online since i have seen reports of frauds already….

I will update this post soon with some links to the software(you need to install the backupmanager)  and some links to stores that might ship the usb-stick soon. In the mean time please spam you thoughts …

Here is what you’ll need to hack your playstation right now

A PS3 console with firmware 3.41
PS Jailbreak USB Modchip ( buy from ???)
An external USB drive formatted to FAT32 with the “Backup Manager” file on it.
Original disc of any PS3 game which you want to backup

Good Luck

Fix your PS3 blu ray drive

Well, after complaining about the support of the Playstation 3 (see my previous posts) I did not rest ;-)

As you know my PS3 was unable to read disks no matter what I tried… So with the warranty already gone and Sony not willing to help I decided to try and fix my playstation 3.

The movielink below shows the issue I had.

This is the problem I had

Since my warranty was gone and the PS3 being pretty useless without it I tried to fix it. I opened the case and took out the BD drive. Please click the link below to see how to do that (pretty simple).

How to get to the drive

Ones you have the disk you can clean the small lens very carefully with some alcohol and soft cloth. Be carefull not to scratch the lens. After this procedure mine was working fine again.

If you for whatever reason don’t want to try this please see the video below. This might be a more suitable fix for your PS3 then!

Another solution for PS3 diskdrive problem

Hopefully this little post helps you if you have similar problems…. Let me know if it did!

Sony Playstation Warranty Sucks

As I have told you in my previous posts my Playstation 3 is not working correctly. It won’t read any discs anymore. The Playstation helpdesk advised me to do all kinds of restore actions and finally mentioned that the update of this week might help……

After installing the update yesterday the drive still doesn’t work.. So I’ve called the Playstation helpdesk ones more. The conclusion is that the drive is faulty (duh)……

Since my playstation is 1,6 years old it is not covered by warranty Sony sais.. This means that my expense release playstation 60 GB is basicly lost in just a small period of time. Sony mentioned when they released this platform that the Playstation 3 would at least last 10 years.. Well, maybe it will be on the shelves this long, but you’ll need to buy at least 6 Playstation 3′s to get to this period????

I’ve been reading online regarding this issue and it seems Sony is aware of this issue and is removing posts from their own forum. This tells me they know they have an issue with the first released Playstations…

Thanks Sony for picking my pockets and not replacing a faulty system which clearly has some design issues……

I’ve spent for more than 1500 euro’s on Playstation stuff (games, camera, extra controllers and the damn thing itself) and this is the support you can expect………….

Several consumer actions are starting up at the moment, hopefully Sony will come to it’s sense and replace these systems…..

Untill then be carefull buying this machine or try and get longer warranty……

Playstation 3 problem

Today I’ve called Sony as I mentioned in my previous post I would do.

The problem is that the diskdrive of my Playstation 3 does not function well. If I’m lucky if it sees the disk in the drive and plays. If the disk plays it will play without any issue, however most of the time (after switching it off and back on) it does not work.

My playstation 3 is 1,5 years old and thus not eligible for warranty clames…. This is the message I got. However I talked to the technician and mentioned that several post on the internet show that this might be some sort of design flaw…. In my opinion it can not be the case that a 500,- euro costing device brakes down due to the fact that the diskdrive is broken.

Tomorrow there will be a new firmware he mentioned, I should try if the playstation still has issues after installing the new firmware…. Don’t think it will help but I can try….

The Sony technician also mentioned that the repair cost would be approx. 200 euros…. :-( I think they really make a mistake here….

I will keep you updated tomorrow and see if my ps is working normally again , hehe

Playstation 3 bluray drive problem

Since the launch I instantly bought myself a Playstation 3. This was the European launch and was in feb/march 2007.

Since this week I’m having issues with my diskdrive and the Playstation won’t play my disks. It doesn’t matter what kind of disks (bluray/game/cd). After trying for a while they sometimes work.. It seems that a lot of people are having these issues now. especially with the 60GB version. I tried calling Sony today but since it’s sunday I got no answer….No problem, I will try again tomorrow. Since the system is more than one year old it might be a non supported issue since the warranty is only one year in my country. I’m hoping that there will be some “understanding” from Sony since I bought the PS3 for about 500 Euro’s. A lot of money for a product that is supposed to last at least 3-5 years imo.

I will let you know how Sony will deal with this problem via this site. Wish me luck ;-)

Harddisk broken? Maybe you can fix it!

It has happened to all of us. The computers harddisk stopped working. Whoops, you forgot to make a back-up and still needed some files that are only on that disk..

There are several companies who can probably retrieve data for you, but these companies are charging pretty much. However if you really NEED the data on the disk you might want to try these instead of messing with it yourself.

Bernard Belanger made a document of how you might fix this yourself. It only works if the drive is still detected by the os and spinning. If you hear a “clicking sound” this might be the place for you.

At geeky projects they have several solutions depending on the type of failure.  You can find to page here.

Good luck if your disk is broken, hopefully this helped you to get back that important files!

If you have found other good resources to fix disks let me know via the comments!
